Ode to An Egg
How long has life cycled through these little safe oval capsules, with everything needed tucked inside?
When we graciously receive eggs from the chickens, we are bowing to our dinosaur earth ancestry. Birds are the only surviving dinosaurs. It has even been shown through DNA studies that chickens are closely related to the Tyrannosaurus Rex! Hold a warm egg and time stands still, you are touching dinosaur time.
I have my son’s small dinosaur figurine on my dashboard to remind me of the bigger story we are all a part of everyday, but find hard to tap into in our highly human-centered lives. The dinosaurs lived for 150 million years- we are so young. As we turned the page from the Age of Reptiles to the Age of Mammals, we slowly took the place of the dinosaurs. We need to remember them and give respect as we likely would not have had our turn, if they hadn’t died out and given way for our tiny furry forbearers to flare forth, eventually bringing our shape, size and highly sophisticated brain.
Eat an egg, hopefully from a happy hen, maybe one you even know, and quietly bow to the dinosaurs for their part in our lives.
